Know your risks of breast cancer

Exercise

Women who exercise four hours per week reduce her risk of breast cancer. Exercise pumps up the immune system and cuts the oestrogen level.

Diet

Eating a high fat diet increases the risk of breast cancer. Fat triggers the hormone oestrogen, that fuels tumour growth. Eat a low-fat, nutritious diet consisting of plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Smoking

Most studies have not found that smoking cause breast cancer. One recent study indicated that there may be a link. However, smoking reduces your survival rate once you have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Alcohol

One or two drinks a day slightly increases your risk of breast cancer.  The more alcohol you drink, the higher your risk.

Contraceptives

There is an increased risk of breast cancer for women under the age of 35 who have been using birth control pills for 10 years or more. Talk to your gynaecologist or family planning nurse for more advice.

Breast-self examination

Learn how to give yourself breast examination.

Family history

If you have a grandmother, mother, sister or daughter who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, then your chance of getting it too is high. See your gynaecologist if you have any sign of unusual symptoms.

Menstrual history

You are at risk of getting breast cancer if you started having your menstruation before the age of 12, you have no children, you had your first child after the age of 30, or you began menopause after the age of 55.

Remember, regular breast examination can save your life!
