Obstetrics,
or Maternity
as it is more popularly known, is
concerned with care of pregnant women during the antenatal period, labour
and the postnatal period.
Our
aim is
–
A Healthy Mother
with a Healthy Child, and we constantly strive to achieve this
goal by means of our well-trained and experienced midwives, a dedicated
medical team, state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and well-equipped
labor room and obstetric theatre.
Our maternal and prenatal mortality rates, which are amongst the lowest in the world, bear testimony to our efforts.
Antenatal
care
is decentralized and daily clinics (ANC)
are held at:
Baie Ste Anne Hospital, Praslin
These
cater respectively to clients from their assigned districts.
Midwives
carry out the routine booking, examinations and laboratory investigations
as per protocol, the emphasis being on thorough counseling of each and
every client about the pregnancy and labour.
Each client is routinely referred to an obstetrician at the second
visit and later on at around 28 weeks.
In the event of any complications there are further referrals.
High-risk
ANC is held on Thursday mornings. High-risk
patients needing closer observation are admitted to the recently renovated
antenatal ward. Each
client has 3 routine ultrasound examinations, once in each trimester. There
are five air-conditioned labour
suites, fully equipped with continuous external fetal monitoring, one
midwife per patient, painless labour facilities and obstetric theatre. The
postnatal care includes
support for breast-feeding, regular visits by pediatricians and family
planning counseling. Our Gynecology service includes:
Specialist
outpatient clinics – Daily 8.15 am to 12 noon by appointment Menopause
clinic – Mondays 1 pm to 4 pm by appointment

Besides
these, there are special sessions on Tuesday mornings in coordination with
the Child Protection Unit and with the Youth
Health Center. Gynaecological consultations are also held during the specialist’s visit to the regional health centers fortnightly. Emergencies
are seen round the clock. Family
planning services
(FP)
are
available at all primary health centers (PHC) and the Youth Health Center
at Mont Fleuri. Besides this
family planning counseling is also offered at Victoria Hospital after
miscarriage or delivery. Counseling
for women with unwanted pregnancy

smear
screening is performed for all women at the PHCs (under FP services) and
