Computed Tomography (CT)

It is the application of computer technology to an x-ray scanner to produce cross-sectional images of the human body.

You should not take any food or fluids 4 hours before the examination.

When you do a CT scan of your abdomen and/or pelvis, you will be provided a liquid containing contrast which you will drink before examination according to specific instructions.

You may continue to take your medications prescribed by your doctor.

The Examination

In the CT scan room , you will be required to lie as still as possible, on the CT couch, which will be raised and moved into the scanner during the examination.

The radiographer may instruct you to hold your breath for several seconds during the period when the scanning is taking place.

An injection of the x-ray dye (contrast medium) may be given depending on the type of CT examination.

The examination usually will take between 10 - 30 minutes depending on the region of the body being scanned.

The radiologist will then interpret the results of the procedure and will report the information to your physician who in turn will discuss the report with you.
