Intravenous Urography

 

 

This is a specialised X-Ray procedure to examine your kidneys, ureters and urinary bladder.

 

Preparation

 

  • You will have to take tablets on the night before your appointment to evacuate your bowels.
  • Do not take food at least 4 hours before your appointment.

  • Do not take fluid 4 hours before your examination.

  • Continue all your routine medications. However, if you are a diabetic, and are taking an oral medication called Metformin (Glucophage), you will be required to stop the medication at least 48 hours before the examination. You will be able to restart your medication 2 days after the examination.

 

 The examination

 

  • A plain film (without contrast) is obtained, to allow the Radiologist to see if there are any stones in kidneys, ureters or bladder.

  • To better see your kidneys, a radio-opaque preparation (contrast medium) will be injected into your blood stream . If you have any allergies or asthma, please inform the attending doctor before the procedure.

  • You will be asked to lie on the x-ray table during most of the examination.

  • Several films of your kidneys, ureters and bladder are taken at different time interval so that the Radiologist can obtain as clear a view of the kidneys as possible.

  • Delayed films from thirty minutes to three or four hours may be requested depending on how fast your kidneys eliminate the contrast.

  • Additional films may be requested by the Radiologist to unable him to make a diagnosis.

 

The radiologist will interpret the results of the procedure and will report the information to your physician who in turn will discuss the report with you.
