Mammography:

It is a specialized radiographic examination of the breast  which uses a special equipment which produces low dose x-rays. This examination is useful as a screening method to detect breast cancer from benign abnormalities of the breast.

A doctor may refer a patient for mammography, for instance, when a lump is felt in the breast. It is usually performed in patients above the age of 35 years.

When you have seen a doctor and you are told that you would need a mammogram examination, you will be required to seek an appointment.

The Mammography Examination

At least two(2) views of each breast are usually obtained during the examination. This means that at least four(4) films are produced. More or less views may be taken as required by the radiologist to make a diagnosis.

The radiographer will ask you to stand or sit beside the mammography unit while your breast is positioned on the table support.

Firm compression will be applied to your breast which will help to produce a higher quality mammogram and will also reduce the radiation dose to your breast. The compression of your breast may cause some discomfort, but this will last at the most for only a few seconds.

It will help if you hold your breath and not move during the short exposure time.

Preparation for the Examination

The patient should refrain from using powder on the breast or armpit before the examination.

It will be in your own interest and also more convenient for you to wear a blouse and skirt or slacks instead of a dress when you attend your mammography examination.
