Barium Studies (Fluoroscopy)

Because the digestive tract cannot be accurately investigated by plain x-rays, it is usually studied using a barium preparation that helps outline the gut.

The Barium Meal

It is the study of the upper part of the digestive tract, mainly the stomach and adjacent segments.

Preparation

You must not eat or drink anything after midnight on the morning before the x-rays.

Avoid smoking during this period.

The Examination

  • You may be given an injection just before the examination.

  • You may be given baking soda crystals that will form gas in your stomach.

  • A cup containing liquid barium will be given to you to drink.

  • The doctor will then proceed with the examination.

After the examination

You will be asked to wait while the radiologist reviews the films to make sure they contain all the necessary information. Occasionally more films may be required.

Barium Enema

This is a specialized examination to study your large intestine in a controlled manner with barium

Preparation

  • A low-residue diet is required before the examination.

  • Avoid vegetables, cereals, milk or creamy products, fruits, oily / fatty food.

  • On the days before the examination you will be required to take laxatives that will help clean your bowels.

  • No solid food should be taken after 12 mid-night, on the day preceding the examination but carry on taking fluids until 2 hours before procedure.

The Examination

The radiologist, a doctor who specializes in x-ray examinations and interpretation, will perform the exam using a machine called a fluoroscope. A rectal tube will be inserted, to allow the barium to flow into your colon in the same manner any enema would be given.

During the exam, the x-ray machine and table will move and you will be asked to roll around so that x-rays are taken in various positions.

Your colon will also be inflated with air, administered through the same rectal tube. This may cause certain discomfort, but is essential as it provides for better visualization.

Several x-ray films will be produced during the examination in different positions, to help the radiologist reach a diagnosis.

After the radiologist has completed the fluoroscopic exam, the technologist will take additional radiographs to complete the exam.

After the examination

The radiologist will interpret the results of the procedure and will report the information to your physician who in turn will discuss the report with you.

After the examination, you should drink plenty of fluids to avoid constipation.

After the examination is completed you will return to your normal diet. The barium should pass normally from your colon.
