INTRODUCTION
It
was originally established as a food laboratory through assistance from
UNDP/FAO.
Became
operational in January 1988, primarily to be of support to the
Environmental Health department of the Ministry of Health in their endeavor
to ensure that the tourism industry and the general population as a whole
consumes safe and wholesome foods.
Through
the years however, its role has extended primarily to encompass the
control of infectious diseases (inc. sexually transmitted diseases) and be
of technical support in the control of viral epidemics in the country.
Functions
Of The Laboratory

2. The Public Health Lab also functions in support of the Epidemiology
and Research Division,
assisting where possible in various surveys.

In addition, where possible, the Public Health Lab will also provide a
service to other
organisations (e.g. the Police and Department of Environment etc.).
